From Biodeterioration to Creativity: Bioreceptivity of Spruce Pine 87 Glass Batch by Fungi

The bioreceptivity, and the consequent biodeterioration of contemporary glass, used by artists worldwide, was studied. two main objectives were: first, to verify if fungi with some culture media would produce more damages than same without a nutritional source, genera damage on glass. Colourless glass samples Spruce Pine 87 Batch (SPB-87) composition were inoculated distinct fungal species, Penicillium chrysogenum Aspergillus niger, separately: (i) half spores (simulating primary bioreceptivity), (ii) in small portion organic matter that can be deposited exposed glassworks, i.e., secondary bioreceptivity). alteration surfaces analysed Optical Microscopy, SEM-EDS µ-Raman. mycelium generated higher amount fingerprints, stains iridescence, whereas niger produced biopitting crystals surface. However, both species damaged different degrees 4 6 months after inoculation, producing physico-chemical (e.g., biopitting), chemical alterations depletion deposition elements crystals). bioreceptivity experiment results less case being almost similar for chrysogenum. new in-depth understanding deterioration post-modern art cultural heritage provided here is paramount importance scientific, conservation artistic communities—to protect materials, or seen as innovative inspirational ways creating future.
